âI donât understand why you have to leave,â Aeria argued.
As the day went on, I continued to explain our plan with Lara, as well as my walk down memory lane. One thing I didnât bring up was the memories of our past lives. Though they were there, and I could speak with Maura about them, something always stopped me from saying it aloud. That and my want to protect them.
Youâll never be able to talk about them.
Maura constantly reminded me each time I was on the verge of saying something. But every time I opened my mouth, the words would change, talking about my memories of home and with the ghosts. It didnât take long for me to give up.
Aiden ordered food twice, determined to get me to eat just as much as Aeria was. Through lunch and dinner, everyone made sure I ate twice the helping Iâd typically eat to try to encourage some weight gain. My stomach felt like it was full of lead by the end of it all. But Aeria kept repeating, âMy baby needs a strong godmother to be around. So, you need to get back to full strength.â
It warmed my heart to hear that she wanted me to be the godmother of her baby, but it was difficult for me to show any excitement for it. My mind was too distracted with preparing for the trial and continually keeping Maura restrained. The need to stay focused while appearing normal and hearing the berating voices all day and night was beginning to take its toll by the evening.
âWhat am I?â Gwen said in jest. âChopped liver?â
Aeria giggled, âFine, you can be her aunt!â
âDeal!â Gwen exclaimed, pointing to Aeria with a wide grin.
When the laugher died down, I decided it was time to break the silence. âI promised Lara Iâd be back tonight,â I explained.
Aeria rolled her eyes in protest, reaching for my hand and pulling me back to the loveseat. âWe just found you. Do you really think Iâm going to let you out of my sight?â
Sighing, I looked to Damon for help. He simply raised an eyebrow and shook his head before saying, âNo way, donât look to me. I donât like you staying in the apartment with them any more than she does.â
I turned to Gwen. âAny help?â
Gwen simply closed her eyes and shook her head. âNope. I agree with them.â
âOkay, then let me phrase it this way,â I pulled my hand away from Aeria and pointed to my chest. âWhen I go to sleep at night, I need to stay constantly aware of the restraints on Maura. One slip and sheâll wreak havoc. Would you rather her do that at Laraâs apartment or here and risk the babyâs life?â
Aeria glared at me. âDonât exaggerate. She wouldnât hurt the baby. Sheâs had too many opportunities to do it and chose not to.â
âSheâs so erratic. She could do something that could hurt Gwen, Damon, or Aidenâor just throw shit around that could accidentlly hit you.
